2009 – 2010

First steps and local roots

Since its creation in 2009, Golden Rice Cambodia quickly established itself as a key player in the Cambodian rice industry. Newborn of a Franco-Cambodian partnership and supported by the AFD, the company set out to enhance the value of local rice while contributing to the sustainable development of its region. From its earliest years, GRC invested in a modern factory and launched its first exports, marking the beginning of an international journey.

Commitment to certifications

Between 2011 and 2015, the company stood out for its dedication to social responsibility and quality. It was among the first in Cambodia to obtain certifications such as ISO 14001, SA 8000, HACCP, and ISO 9001:2015, demonstrating its commitment to meeting the highest standards. These efforts paid off: in 2012 and 2013, Cambodian rice processed by GRC was awarded the title of “World’s Best Rice,” paving the way for international recognition.

International expansion

GRC’s story continued with major milestones: in 2017, the company received official approval to export organic rice, strengthening its position in a fast-growing market. Between 2018 and 2024, Cambodian rice was once again awarded multiple national and international prizes, confirming the industry’s reputation for excellence. Today, Golden Rice Cambodia employs over 150 people and supports more than 70,000 partner farmers, united by the same ambition: to elevate Cambodian rice to global benchmark status.

Focus on innovation and quality

In 2025 and beyond, GRC is pursuing new international certifications (BRC, IFS) and an ambitious strategy for 2026–2029. The company is firmly committed to a sustainable trajectory, placing innovation, quality, and social responsibility at the heart of its growth, to continue showcasing Cambodian rice on markets worldwide.

Looking back, I am proud to see how the company has grown into a recognized player, capable of delivering products and services that meet high global expectations.

Today, my vision remains optimistic. The company benefits from the firm support of its main shareholder and from the strong commitment of its staff, whose dedication ensures the proper functioning of the organization. One of the most important lessons from this journey has been understanding how critical leadership transitions are — and how essential it is to manage them carefully to secure long-term stability.

For me, the Golden Rice journey is a passionate one. Challenges are inevitable, but they must always be addressed with responsibility, patience, and respect for people and the environment. Social accountability and environmental commitment remain essential pillars for the company’s future.
